Canadian Prime Minister Carney signaled on the 24th that his government is prepared to re-engage in dialogue with the United States regarding the ongoing tariff dispute, provided Washington changes its current approach.

Speaking about the escalating trade tensions, Carney stated that Canada would willingly join negotiations if American officials first come to the table with the proper mindset and a genuine commitment to partnership regarding Canadian industry. He firmly rejected the notion that Canada should be treated as a subordinate to the US, nor that it should hold a position of disadvantage in the relationship.

Reacting to the latest tariff threats from US President Trump, Carney said he was not taken by surprise. He asserted that Washington is attempting to use unfair bargaining conditions to dismantle Canada's automotive, steel, and aluminum sectors, vowing that he would never accept such an outcome.

Earlier on the 24th, President Trump took to social media to warn that tariffs on all Canadian vehicles and steel would be raised to 50% starting January 1, 2027. This comes after trade negotiations between the two nations recently fell apart.

Negotiations in this round began on July 20, with Trump threatening to impose a 50% tariff on hundreds of specific goods valued at roughly $20 billion imported from Canada, set to take effect on August 19. On the evening of August 18, the US announced a three-day delay of those tariffs.

According to reports from both sides, negotiators held days of discussions in Washington, but late on August 21, Prime Minister Carney announced a suspension of the trade talks and recalled the Canadian delegation. On the 24th, US Vice President Vance stated that trade negotiations with Canada were still ongoing.
