South Korea is grappling with a sharp rise in agricultural prices as a relentless heat wave sweeps across the nation, driving up the cost of key vegetables and stoking fears of "heatflation." Data from the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation reveals significant price hikes over the past month, with spinach, cucumbers, zucchini, and lettuce all seeing substantial increases.

Spinach prices have surged by 152.3%, with 100 grams now retailing at 1,978 won (approximately $1.46 USD), up from 784 won just a month ago. This dramatic rise is attributed to reduced supply of leafy greens, which are particularly vulnerable to high temperatures. Other vegetables have followed suit: the price of a 10-pack of cucumbers jumped 54.8% to 8,313 won, while a single zucchini rose 46.6% and lettuce climbed 41.7%.

The impact of the extreme heat is extending beyond vegetables into livestock and fisheries. As of August 7, over 900,000 livestock animals have been reported dead due to the heat, with poultry accounting for roughly 95% of that figure. In the seafood sector, warmer ocean temperatures are driving up prices: the average wholesale price for hairtail has increased 41.5% year-on-year to 16,700 won per kilogram, while mackerel prices have risen 47.3%. Industry experts warn that the effects on marine life could persist, as ocean temperatures may remain elevated longer than on land, potentially worsening supply constraints in September.

These rising food costs are fueling broader concerns about inflation. The Bank of Korea estimates that extreme heat could push overall inflation up by as much as 0.56 percentage points over a year, underscoring the growing role of climate factors in price dynamics. Market analysts now predict that South Korea's consumer price index may climb back above 3% in August, reversing a recent dip to 2.8% in July, which was driven by lower international oil prices.
