Apple CEO Tim Cook, who has led the tech giant for over a decade, will officially step down as CEO on September 1 and transition to the role of Executive Chairman. At the farewell party held in his honor, a rarely seen side of Cook emerged—he publicly acknowledged his partner, Mike, during a speech.

According to reports, the celebration took place last Sunday at Apple's campus in Cupertino, California. The event was held partly at Caffè Macs, the employee dining hall inside the company's iconic circular headquarters, with the band OneRepublic performing in the central open-air courtyard. A photo circulating on X shows Cook holding a guitar while posing with band members. Approximately 200 people attended, nearly all of them Apple employees.

Public Recognition of Private Partner

During his address, Cook directly referenced his partner by name, saying "Mike." According to insiders, this is highly unusual for Cook, who rarely discusses his personal life in public or semi-public settings—the only exception being his 2014 announcement that he is gay.

Steve Jobs' Widow and Former COO Speak at Event

Several key figures from Apple's leadership took the stage at the farewell gathering. Laurene Powell Jobs, widow of co-founder and former CEO Steve Jobs, attended and delivered remarks. Jeff Williams, who retired last year as Apple's Chief Operating Officer, also spoke. Additionally, Eddy Cue, who oversees services and health initiatives, and John Ternus, the current hardware engineering chief who will assume the CEO role, both addressed the attendees.

Ternus Takes Over with Focus on Continuity

Next week, Cook will begin a new chapter in his Apple career, continuing his involvement as Executive Chairman. Apple has stated that Cook "will assist the company with specific matters, including communications with global policymakers."

How Ternus will steer Apple in new directions remains unclear, but multiple insiders indicate that no major leadership changes are expected in the near term. They characterize the transition with a single word: continuity. This theme extends even to the smallest details—according to two sources, Cook's executive assistant will remain in place to support Ternus.

During last month's earnings call, his final as CEO, Cook remarked: "The transition has gone smoothly, and I am incredibly excited for John as he takes the helm and leads Apple into a new era."
