The sprawling Zhangye oasis at the foot of the Qilian Mountains is currently in the midst of a crucial agricultural operation. Across its 1.1 million acres dedicated to hybrid corn seed production, the critical window for detasseling—the removal of the male pollen-producing tassels—is in full swing.
From the contiguous seed production bases in Ganzhou District to the field ridges of Linze County and the expansive green seas of Gaotai County, a dynamic scene unfolds. The hum of efficient, intelligent detasseling machinery intermingles with the meticulous work of manual laborers, painting a vivid picture of the agricultural rush in the Hexi Corridor, a region often dubbed the "Silicon Valley of Corn Seeds."
In the high-standard corn seed production base at Wugedun Village, Shajing Town, Ganzhou District, a lightweight intelligent detasseling machine moves steadily along the ridges. Its mechanical arms extend and retract with precision, accurately removing the corn tassels. "Hiring manual labor for detasseling would require about a hundred people. Labor prices are high right now, and it's nearly impossible to find workers. Fortunately, our company received a trial unit of a provincially developed and matured prototype for integrated detasseling and husking machines. It can cover 100 acres a day, solving our urgent need," said Li Hailong, field production manager at Zhangye Modern Seed Industry Group Co., Ltd.. He added that they plan to use this prototype for mechanical detasseling on 300 acres, aiming to lead the way in promoting mechanized detasseling across the district.
"Corn is a monoecious plant. If a plant self-pollinates, the resulting kernels are inbred and cannot be used as commercial seed. Therefore, in seed production fields, female parent rows are typically planted with one male parent row every five to seven rows. Before flowering, the tassels are removed from the female plants, forcing them to accept pollen only from the designated male rows. This ensures the production of high-purity, high-quality hybrid corn seed. Additionally, detasseling saves nutrient consumption, improves light conditions, reduces pest and disease damage, and effectively increases corn yield," explained Zhang Jinhan, a senior agronomist at the municipal seed administration bureau. He emphasized that detasseling is a key step in corn seed production, with a tight window of 7 to 10 days. The vast scale and timeliness of the operation are crucial for both seed quality and yield.
"We are at the peak of the detasseling period. Even offering over 300 yuan per day, it's hard to find manual labor. Intelligent mechanical detasseling is lower cost, faster, and less time-consuming, significantly reducing labor intensity," said Guo Jianyou, a villager from Liusheshe, Wugedun Village. Watching dozens of acres of seed corn being efficiently processed by the "iron machine," his eyes were filled with amazement. "This type of lightweight mechanical detasseling costs about 100 yuan per acre, which is considerably lower than manual labor," introduced Duan Haichen, head of the Ganzhou District Agricultural Mechanization Technology Extension Station.
A similar scene of accelerated mechanical detasseling is playing out on the 10,000-acre seed corn base in Lanbao Village, Shahe Town, Linze County. "Compared to last year's 3CX-6 model, this new machine has added an automatic wheelbase adjustment function. It can precisely adapt to corn plant height and row spacing, greatly improving efficiency and accuracy. It's easy to operate, achieves a detasseling rate over 85%, and can cover about 100 acres per day," said Yang Xuexiao, a machinery operator for Linze Ruiyuan Seed Industry Co., Ltd., who was conducting field trials with the detasseler.
While machines work swiftly, manual labor remains busy. In Lanbao Village, a combined mechanical and manual approach is being used on 3,600 acres of seed corn. Dozens of workers move quickly along the rows, their fingers deftly plucking out the tassels. "This work is also an 'agronomic art.' The window is only 7 to 10 days. If we're late and the corn sheds pollen, it affects seed purity," said Lan Zenghu, a grower who told reporters he planted 500 acres of seed corn this year and hires 30-40 people daily for detasseling. "In previous years, during the peak season, daily wages could rise to three or four hundred yuan and you still couldn't find enough people. This year, the village coordinated the use of detasseling machines. They go through first to handle the bulk, and then we manually clean up the remaining corners. It's faster and less worrisome," Lan Zenghu said, wiping sweat from his brow before heading back into the field. Cao Zhengrong, deputy director of the village committee, was also busy inspecting the work, following the crews and offering reminders: "Remember to remove the tassel with the leaf sheath. Our village has eight different seed lines. We cannot be careless at all. Every tassel must be removed completely, with no remnants left behind."
The seed corn fields in Xiaoquan Village (Ganjun Town), Liming Village (Xiaoman Town), Dongsan Village (Shajing Town), and Liaoyan Village (Mingyong Town) in Ganzhou District are also bustling with activity. "Our company has 25,000 acres of seed corn across Xiaoquan, Liming, Dongsan, and Liaoyan villages, mostly relying on manual detasseling. On average, a person can cover 3 to 4 acres per day. In Xiaoquan Village, 3,000 out of 6,800 acres have been detasseled, and we estimate it will take about another week to finish," said Xiao Yajun, project manager for Zhangye Denghai Seed Industry Co., Ltd., who is busy at the planting base in Xiaoquan Village. He serves both as a technical supervisor for the detasseling operation and a quality inspector, closely monitoring the work in the Xiaoquan area.
In Gaotai County, the 100,000 acres of seed corn in Luotuocheng Town have also entered the peak detasseling period. In the contiguous seed production base of Guoshu Village, grower Zhao Ke is leading a team of 15 workers detasseling in smaller plots, while a detasseling machine moves slowly through the larger, contiguous fields. "In previous years, we relied entirely on manual labor. Fifteen people would need about two weeks. This year, the town's agricultural machinery service team brought the detasseler to the village. The machine handles the large contiguous plots first, and we manually clean up the smaller patches. This keeps us on schedule and saves a lot on labor costs," Zhao Ke explained. He noted that modern corn seed production requires new, scaled agricultural machinery as well as the meticulous, plant-protecting skills of "traditional agronomy." The combination of both aims to produce high-quality, high-purity seeds.
In the height of summer, the green waves of seed corn stretch all the way to the foothills of the Qilian Mountains. As the detasseling work is progressively completed, these carefully tended plants will follow the natural rhythm of grain filling and maturation. They are set to grow into the "golden seeds" that help safeguard the nation's corn seed supply. Meanwhile, the new intelligent machinery navigating these green waves is injecting technological strength into this "Silicon Valley of Chinese Corn Seeds," using smart capabilities to bolster the foundation of the modern seed industry.
