Medtronic Seeks FDA Clearance to Broaden Hugo Surgical Robot's Use to General and Gynecological Procedures

On June 3rd, Medtronic PLC announced that it has submitted a 510(k) premarket notification to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The application seeks to expand the indications for its Hugo robotic-assisted surgery system to include general surgery, encompassing hernia repair, and gynecological procedures. This move is intended to substantially widen the platform's clinical application scope within the United States, addressing the growing demand for robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery within these high-volume specialties.

Concurrently, the company announced the completion of patient enrollment for its "Embrace Gynecology" Investigational Device Exemption clinical study, which evaluates the Hugo system for gynecological surgery. This prospective, multi-center study enrolled 70 patients across five U.S. hospitals, aiming to assess the system's safety and effectiveness in robot-assisted gynecological procedures.

Regarding device integration, Medtronic has submitted a 510(k) application for the use of its LigaSure RAS Maryland device with the Hugo system. This vessel sealing technology, employed in over 35 million surgeries across 65 countries, is designed to provide surgeons with greater confidence and control during critical steps of complex operations. Furthermore, the company has received FDA 510(k) clearance for its ProGrip Advanced self-fixing polypropylene mesh for use in robot-assisted ventral hernia repair. The ProGrip mesh family has been used in more than 6 million procedures, with approximately 470,000 ventral hernia repairs performed annually in the U.S.

The Hugo RAS system received FDA clearance for urological surgery in December 2025 and completed its first U.S. commercial procedure at the Cleveland Clinic in February 2026. The system now has nearly five years of commercial experience in over 35 countries globally, having completed tens of thousands of surgeries. Dr. Matthew Kroh, Medtronic's Chief Medical Officer, stated that as more surgeons and patients opt for robotic-assisted surgery, the market requires greater technological access and training, and Medtronic is well-positioned to provide that choice.
