Hard drive manufacturer Seagate Technology PLC (STX.US) reported fiscal fourth-quarter 2026 (ending July 3) results and next-quarter guidance that significantly exceeded Wall Street expectations, sending its shares sharply higher in after-hours trading on Tuesday. Following a recent broad pullback in AI concept stocks, Seagate's share price faced notable headwinds before the earnings release.

According to the company's announcement, for the quarter ending in June (the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026), Seagate posted adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $5.71 on revenue of $3.6 billion. Analysts surveyed by FactSet had anticipated adjusted EPS of $5.10 and revenue of $3.5 billion. Earnings surged 120% year-over-year, while revenue grew 49%. Additionally, the company generated operating cash flow of $1.3 billion and free cash flow of $1.1 billion during the quarter. It ended the period with $1.7 billion in cash and cash equivalents, repaid $302 million in debt during the quarter, and a total of $1.4 billion for the full fiscal year.

The company's revenue guidance for the current quarter has a midpoint of $4.1 billion, compared to the FactSet analyst consensus estimate of $3.78 billion for the September quarter. Seagate CEO Dave Mosley stated in the press release, "Our results were driven by robust cloud data center demand and disciplined execution, and we expect this momentum to continue into fiscal 2027. As artificial intelligence accelerates data generation and enhances data value, demand for high-capacity storage has long-term durability."

"Leveraging our Mozaic platform and differentiated HAMR (Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording) technology roadmap, Seagate is well-positioned to efficiently address the growing exabyte-scale storage demand while driving earnings growth and value creation," Mosley added.

Significant Pullback After AI Rally

During Tuesday's regular trading session, Seagate's stock declined by 8.5%, but it surged in after-hours trading, initially spiking nearly 10% before settling to trade over 5% higher at $785.94. Seagate and its competitor Western Digital Corp. (WDC.US) together dominate the hard drive market. The race among cloud hyperscalers to build AI data centers has created unprecedented incremental demand for HDDs, placing both companies among the top-performing AI concept stocks. Seagate's year-to-date gains stand at 172%.

However, recent concerns over the sustainability of AI capital expenditures have triggered a sharp retreat in Seagate's stock price. Tuesday's closing price was 22% below its level at the start of the month. Investors are actively debating whether AI will bring about a long-term structural shift for the storage and memory component market—an industry historically characterized by dramatic boom-and-bust cycles.

Pervasive Analyst Optimism, Room for Upside

Even before the earnings release, Wall Street sentiment towards Seagate was bullish. Wedbush analyst Matt Bryson raised his price target for Seagate from $825 to $1,000 ahead of the report, maintaining an "Outperform" rating. He believes HAMR drives are likely to secure new long-term agreements in the second half of 2026. Bryson noted that Seagate's production capacity is essentially booked through 2027, reinforcing a favorable supply-demand dynamic.

Rosenblatt was more aggressive, raising its target from $1,000 to $1,300, citing the HDD industry's benefit from demand exceeding supply and a price inflection point. The firm anticipates incremental gross margins approaching 80% as average selling prices rise and unit costs decline at a high-single-digit to low-double-digit rate.

Mizuho raised its target to $1,090 and increased its fiscal 2027 EPS estimate to $28.35, above the consensus estimate of $26.57. Morgan Stanley, meanwhile, designated Seagate as its "most preferred AI exposure" in the IT hardware sector, suggesting that under the most optimistic pricing scenario, Seagate's EPS could grow tenfold between 2025 and 2028.

Currently, the Wall Street consensus rating for Seagate is "Strong Buy," with an average price target of approximately $1,020, implying over 25% upside potential over the next 12 months.
