Japanese industrial group Hitachi Ltd. (OTC: HTHIY) announced that it has joined Anthropic's Critical Infrastructure Defense Program as a founding partner, with the two parties set to use the Claude artificial intelligence model to strengthen cybersecurity protection for critical infrastructure including energy, utilities, and transportation. This marks a further deepening of the cooperation agreement reached by the two companies in June this year. As cyberattack risks fueled by the development of AI technology continue to rise, Anthropic is pushing to apply its models to the critical infrastructure security field.

Hitachi joins Anthropic's defense program, expanding Claude's industrial applications

In a statement released on October 9, Hitachi Ltd. (OTC: HTHIY) said it has formally joined Anthropic's Critical Infrastructure Defense Program and become one of its founding partners. The program aims to enhance the cybersecurity defense capabilities of critical infrastructure such as utilities and transportation by integrating Anthropic's Claude model into relevant products and services. As a large enterprise whose business covers energy, transportation, and industrial systems, Hitachi Ltd. (OTC: HTHIY) has an extensive footprint in the critical infrastructure sector. Joining the defense program will further expand the scope of its cooperation with Anthropic in the application of artificial intelligence technology. The two sides had previously reached a cooperation agreement in June this year, and participation in the Critical Infrastructure Defense Program represents a further extension of that existing relationship.

AI elevates cyberattack capabilities, drawing attention to critical infrastructure security

The Hitachi collaboration comes at a time of growing concern over the cybersecurity risks posed by artificial intelligence. Earlier this year, a series of high-profile cyberattacks and security incidents involving AI agents sparked industry fears that artificial intelligence could be used to carry out more sophisticated cyberattacks. As the capabilities of AI models and agents continue to strengthen, the cybersecurity field faces both new attack risks and new defense requirements. Critical infrastructure involves vital systems such as energy supply, public services, and transportation, and its cybersecurity issues have drawn particular attention. Anthropic had previously warned that the development of artificial intelligence could exacerbate cybersecurity threats and called for slowing the development of some AI technologies to prevent similar security incidents from recurring. Against this backdrop, Anthropic is using the Critical Infrastructure Defense Program to promote the application of the Claude model in cybersecurity products and services.

Cooperation extends into critical infrastructure, with concrete progress already made in AI vulnerability detection

This collaboration builds on Hitachi's earlier participation in an Anthropic cybersecurity project. In June this year, Hitachi Ltd. (OTC: HTHIY) joined Anthropic-led Project Glasswing, using the Claude Mythos Preview model to strengthen the security protection of software and products related to social infrastructure. Verification results published by Hitachi in July showed that in software systems containing millions of lines of code, Claude Mythos Preview was able to significantly shorten certain security verification processes that would otherwise take weeks, covering tasks such as threat modeling. The new program launched by Anthropic on October 8 further expands the scope of cooperation. In addition to Hitachi, the first batch of partners also includes Accenture, CrowdStrike, Deloitte, Palo Alto Networks, and Rockwell Automation. Anthropic will provide partners with advanced Claude models, on-site engineer support, and threat research resources to help identify and fix security vulnerabilities in critical infrastructure systems. The collaboration also reflects Anthropic's efforts to expand the application of its AI models in the enterprise cybersecurity market, particularly in industries such as power, water, manufacturing, and transportation that place high demands on continuous system operation.
