Smurfit WestRock PLC's stock fell 5.22% in pre-market trading on Thursday, following the release of its first-quarter financial results which showed a significant decline in profitability.

The company reported net income of $63 million for Q1 2026, a sharp drop from $382 million in the same period last year. Its net income margin contracted to 0.8% from 5.0%. Management attributed a $65 million negative impact to adverse weather events, primarily affecting its North American operations. Adjusted EBITDA also decreased to $1,076 million from $1,252 million a year ago.

Further pressuring the stock were two additional announcements. The company has launched a consultation on the potential closure of its SSK paper mill in Birmingham, UK, which could impact 130 jobs. Concurrently, Smurfit WestRock is undertaking a review of its listing on the London Stock Exchange, the outcome of which may result in a delisting from the LSE, though its primary NYSE listing is not under review.
