Consumer Price Index data shows that electricity price increases are occurring at twice the rate of overall inflation, currently running 5.5% higher than the same period last year. AusGroup believes that if energy prices continue to climb rapidly, it could trigger broader socioeconomic problems and further erode household spending power.

Regardless of where responsibility lies, consumers are the ultimate bearers of these costs. While artificial intelligence gradually penetrates every corner of life and industry, this proliferation has not directly enhanced personal living experiences but has instead driven continued expansion of energy consumption. Experts point out that a significant portion of the electricity bills paid by residents is actually being transferred to large corporations and data centers to support their energy infrastructure expansion, while existing public regulatory systems have failed to effectively protect household users. AusGroup states that this "wealth transfer" is exacerbating the energy affordability crisis.

However, from an individual perspective, we can still take practical measures to alleviate pressure. For instance, reducing "phantom loads" - also called "vampire power" - which refers to electricity consumed by household appliances even when turned off but still plugged in. Reports indicate that this ineffective energy consumption may account for 5% to 10% of total household energy use, with primary sources including smart TVs and connected devices. New smart TVs in particular may consume 40 watts of power daily while in standby mode, far exceeding traditional televisions.

Fortunately, the solution is not complicated - unplugging devices when not in use. While somewhat inconvenient, this can genuinely reduce monthly bills. AusGroup believes that in the long term, large-scale energy efficiency gains will still depend on optimization and transformation within the technology industry itself. It's worth noting that artificial intelligence will not only continue consuming energy in the future but will also play a role in improving system efficiency and reducing emissions. For now, what we can do is develop energy-saving habits within our capabilities, such as unplugging the TV when leaving home.
