The rally was driven by a significant increase in crude oil prices. Brent crude futures climbed nearly 3% after comments from U.S. President Donald Trump and Iran's foreign minister further dented hopes for a deal to end ship attacks and seizures around the Strait of Hormuz, elevating geopolitical risk premiums. Additionally, U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright told CNBC he expects China to increase oil imports from the United States, boosting sentiment for U.S. energy producers.
Occidental was among the top movers on the S&P 500 energy index, which rose 1.1%, with other major oil companies like Exxon Mobil and Chevron also posting gains during the session.
