Tesla Motors is accelerating the rollout of its purpose-built autonomous vehicle, the Cybercab, a move that could reshape the operational framework of its Robotaxi service.
On August 22, Tesla Motors announced via its X platform that it will host a Cybercab unveiling event on September 3 in Austin, Texas. This model, designed exclusively for fully driverless operation, features no steering wheel or brake pedals, marking it as the company's first dedicated Robotaxi vehicle. It is expected to join the Austin fleet, gradually shifting the current operational model that relies primarily on the Model Y.
According to prior reports, Tesla Motors plans a two-phase rollout: first, offering Cybercab rides to employees on public roads, followed by a public launch several days later.
Pre-Launch Preparations Nearly Complete
Before the official debut, Tesla Motors has completed a range of preparatory steps. Since June, the Cybercab has been undergoing testing on public roads across multiple U.S. locations, including Austin. In July, the company began having employees test rides on private roads within the Austin facility to gather feedback, a process similar to the pre-launch phase of the Robotaxi service last year.
Concurrently, Tesla Motors has been training emergency responders in Austin, instructing them on how to handle and move the vehicle in urgent situations.
Given the Cybercab's lack of a steering wheel and brake pedals, there is no possibility for a human driver to take over if the autonomous system encounters an issue. Tesla Motors states that it has remote operators on standby who can intervene during emergencies.
This raises regulatory considerations. For comparison, Amazon's Zoox only received approval from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in July to operate its similarly designed vehicle, which also lacks steering wheels and pedals, for commercial passenger service, having previously been limited to free rides. It remains unclear whether Tesla Motors has secured comparable approval, or if the Cybercab will immediately engage in paid operations.
Integration with the Existing Model Y Fleet
Currently, Tesla Motors operates its Robotaxi service in Austin using modified Model Y vehicles, which include upgrades such as self-cleaning cameras and a secondary communication unit. According to data from the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, Tesla Motors has 186 Model Y vehicles registered locally for its Robotaxi operations.
In contrast, the Cybercab requires no additional modifications, which could theoretically reduce operational complexity. However, whether Tesla Motors will gradually replace the Model Y with the Cybercab or run both models in parallel remains unclear.
Notably, Tesla Motors began producing the Cybercab in Texas last month but has since indicated that it will not reach mass production scale within 2026. During the July earnings call, Elon Musk explained that because the Cybercab is built on an entirely new platform, Tesla Motors needs to first accumulate proprietary driving data before it can expand deployment further.
