Qingdao Airport celebrated its fifth anniversary of relocation and operations on August 12, launching a "Hi FIVE Qingdao Airport" themed marketing campaign with tangible travel benefits for passengers.
Over the past five years, the airport's network has expanded significantly. Representatives from over 30 airports, airlines, and travel partners gathered at the event, offering regional souvenirs to passengers. A traveler heading to Xi'an received a terracotta warrior figurine, while a child flying to Kunming was delighted with a Yunnan elephant toy. Souvenirs from Xinjiang, Gansu, Changchun, Changsha, and Xiamen were also popular, adding a regional flavor to the terminal.
Alongside gifts, the event featured practical travel services. Airport staff answered inquiries on baggage through-checking and transit procedures. Qingdao TV Tower offered free tickets, blending air travel with tourism. Airlines presented discounted tickets, bonus mileage, and VIP services, drawing many visitors. Restaurants like Cai's Donkey Meat and Yipin Yangtang in the airport food court offered discounts for employees and passengers. Live-streamed travel promotions and activities like "Fly in for Beer" and "Fly in for Concerts" extended the anniversary celebrations throughout the summer.
The anniversary's highlight is reflected in rising passenger numbers. On July 29 and 31, daily passenger throughput hit 104,000, setting new records. In August, the "100,000+" figure has become a regular occurrence.
Wider Air Routes
Five years after its relocation, Qingdao Airport has established a clear network connecting domestic cities, focusing on Japan and South Korea, and reaching intercontinental destinations. Domestically, it operates high-frequency "bus-style express" routes to 12 key cities, with over 10 daily flights to destinations like Shanghai, Chengdu, and Urumqi. New routes to Yan'an, Datong, Mangshi, and Ulanhot connect inland tourists to Qingdao's coastal attractions. Since summer, airlines have added over 30 new routes, with more than 200 extra weekly flights, averaging over 620 daily takeoffs and landings.
Internationally, the airport's role as a Northeast Asian hub has strengthened. The Seoul express route operates 34 flights daily. As of July, the airport handled 1.195 million Korean passengers, up 15% year-on-year; 389,000 Southeast Asian passengers, up 98%; and 2.1 million international and regional passengers, up 12%. Inbound foreign passengers reached 390,000, a 37% increase. A frequent business traveler to Seoul commented, "Qingdao Airport has developed rapidly over five years, making flights to various places more convenient."
Integrated Travel and Tourism
Over five years, Qingdao Airport has aligned with the city's tourism trends, turning "traffic" into "retention." Boarding passes now serve as keys to urban consumption, offering free beer tastings, scenic spot visits, dining discounts, and shopping deals. This "ticket economy" ecosystem encourages passengers to move from "arriving in Qingdao" to "experiencing Qingdao."
Benefits cover the entire journey: passengers can redeem free meals like sea cucumber rice or seafood dumplings, and summer beer tastings have been popular. The airport's transit hotel now offers free overnight stays for eligible international transit passengers. Outbound passengers get free first-day parking at the airport's affordable lot. International transit passengers can choose free experiences from a tour on the Olympic Sailing Center, a visit to the Underwater World, or a cruise, while inbound international passengers can join the "Qingyi Fly, Free TV Tower Tour" program. Partnerships with the Mixc shopping district offer shared benefits for members, integrating dining, accommodation, transport, sightseeing, and shopping.
Enhanced Service Warmth
Service improvements have matched network expansion. The airport launched three service brands: "Qingyi Deng" (Easy Boarding), "Qingyi Su" (Easy Stay), and "Qingyi Zhuan" (Easy Transfer), streamlining the travel process. Passengers without checked luggage can board by arriving at the gate 15 minutes before departure. The airport operates one concourse 24/7, with integrated check-in, security, rest areas, dining, and care services for late-night travelers. Affordable dining, parking, and accommodation benefits make transit smoother.
On August 12, the "Hi FIVE" cheers faded, but the airport's busy operations continued. The fifth anniversary marks a milestone and a collection of ordinary days.
