Hyundai Motor's chief executive José Muñoz has unveiled the automaker's most extensive product launch initiative in its history, announcing plans to introduce over 100 all-new and refreshed models. This strategic move aims to challenge Toyota Motor in the fiercely competitive US hybrid segment while defending against rivals in other global markets.
The ambitious roadmap was officially presented Wednesday during Hyundai's CEO Investor Day in Seoul. South Korea's largest automaker will venture into 18 entirely new vehicle segments, encompassing mid-size pickup trucks, light commercial vehicles, and body-on-frame models. Of the total lineup, 58 models are earmarked for the company's biggest market in the US, 41 for Europe, 26 for India, and 22 for China, with certain vehicles launching simultaneously across multiple regions.
This significant portfolio overhaul comes amid softening global demand for pure battery-electric vehicles. Hyundai is pursuing a diversified powertrain strategy, expanding its hybrid and extended-range electric vehicle offerings while continuing its EV development. Increasing hybrid availability in the US market is seen as crucial for maintaining market share, particularly as consumers increasingly gravitate toward gasoline-electric models amid elevated fuel prices.
Among the 100 planned vehicles, seven are scheduled to debut within the next eight months. These include the fully redesigned Tucson mid-size SUV along with its hybrid variant, the all-new Ioniq 3 compact electric vehicle, and the first-ever Santa Fe extended-range electric model. The extended-range version targets a combined driving range exceeding 600 miles (966 kilometers), featuring a new battery pack with charging speeds 40% faster than previous-generation cells. Production will take place at Hyundai's Alabama manufacturing facility.
