The U.S. telecom and media giant Comcast released its second-quarter financial results for fiscal year 2026 on the 23rd. Driven by major sports events like the FIFA World Cup and the NBA playoffs, along with a strong performance from its film business, the company's streaming platform Peacock achieved a profit of $189 million during the quarter, marking the first time the service has turned a profit since its launch.
Comcast reported that Peacock added 2 million new paid subscribers in the second quarter as of June, bringing its total subscriber base to 48 million. Bolstered by gains in the streaming and film segments, the company posted quarterly revenue of $29.9 billion, exceeding Wall Street expectations.
By business segment, Comcast's content and experiences division performed notably well. Within this, the film studio business saw revenue surge 25% year-over-year to approximately $3 billion, while segment profit jumped sharply from $61 million in the same period last year to $202 million. Media business revenue rose to $5.7 billion, with profit reaching $708 million. However, the theme park business experienced a profit decline, impacted by lower international park revenue and higher operating costs.
In connectivity and platforms, intensified competition in the fiber and fixed wireless broadband market led to a net loss of 167,000 domestic broadband subscribers for Comcast during the quarter. Conversely, the mobile wireless business continued to grow, adding 448,000 net new lines in the period.
Notably, this earnings report is the first since Comcast announced a restructuring plan. To unlock asset value and improve operational efficiency, the company is steadily progressing with its strategic plan to spin off NBCUniversal and Sky into independent entities, with the separation process expected to be completed within a year.
