In Hebei Province, the flood season is a period prone to natural disasters and a critical phase for summer corn's growth, development, and yield formation. Recently, the Corn Innovation Team of the provincial modern agricultural industry technology system has issued production guidance for flood prevention and disaster resistance in corn cultivation. The guidance emphasizes focusing on key agricultural timings, implementing essential technologies, scientifically responding to impacts from heavy rain and flooding, and ensuring the safe production of autumn grain.
Du Xiong, a post expert with the Corn Innovation Team, explained that the alternating occurrence of heavy rainfall, short-duration strong winds, and high temperature and humidity in July and August can easily lead to field waterlogging, root hypoxia, fertilizer leaching, plant lodging, and increased pest and disease pressure. He advised that all regions should adhere to the principles of "prevention before rain, risk avoidance during rain, and urgent management after rain, with categorized recovery." The current focus of corn field management should be on drainage to reduce waterlogging, supporting weak plants to restore vigor, and preventing lodging and disease.
Before heavy rain arrives, planting entities should thoroughly inspect field ridges, headland ditches, village-level drainage ditches, and drainage sluice gates. They must clear away weeds, straw, silt, and blockages to ensure field water can flow into ditches, ditch water can enter channels, and channel water can be discharged externally. For fields with overly high plant density, excessively vigorous growth, or thin and weak stalks, it is recommended not to apply large amounts of nitrogen fertilizer before the rain to prevent excessive growth and lodging. For fields with weak seedlings, pale leaf color, or previous nutrient deficiency, a small amount of fast-acting nitrogen fertilizer can be applied around the time of rainfall to promote uniform growth within the plant population and avoid a single application of large amounts of water and fertilizer.
After heavy rainfall, efforts should be made to drain accumulated water from fields within 24 hours. Du Xiong suggested that after field water is drained, deep tillage or subsoiling should not be performed immediately to prevent soil compaction and secondary root damage caused by machinery operation on overly wet soil. When the surface soil has dried slightly enough to allow entry by personnel or machinery, shallow cultivation should be conducted promptly to break up soil crusting, improve soil aeration conditions, and promote the growth of new roots.
