Hainan's commercial space industry is rapidly gathering momentum, drawing interest from both domestic and international enterprises. At the 2026 Wenchang International Aerospace Forum, held from August 24 to 26 in Wenchang City, Hainan, the Wenchang International Aerospace City Administration signed cooperation agreements with 17 companies spanning the commercial space supply chain, covering rocket recovery support, satellite tracking and control, propulsion testing, space tourism, and industrial-financial services. Additionally, Hainan Aerospace Group inked deals with several institutions to bring finance, culture, tourism, and industrial investment into the "aerospace circle."

Tato Lawrence Magila, CEO of South Africa's PyraLink Aerospace, expressed strong interest in establishing a presence in Wenchang. "We intend to set up a company and relocate R&D operations here," he said during the forum, adding that he looks forward to deepening cooperation between African and Chinese space industries.

Hainan's commercial space launch site has now completed 21 launch missions, according to Governor Liu Xiaoming. The Long March 10B carrier rocket achieved the world's first net-based recovery in Wenchang, and a satellite super-factory has entered trial production. "Hainan's commercial space sector is accelerating its rise, moving toward becoming a globally influential hub for the industry," Liu stated.

Wenchang is no longer just a launch support base. It has evolved into an industrial city encompassing rocket final assembly, satellite manufacturing, data trading, and space-themed tourism. Leveraging the new opportunities presented by the Hainan Free Trade Port's island-wide customs closure and the commercialization of reusable rockets, a growing number of companies have accelerated their plans to establish operations in the region.

During the forum, representatives from space enterprises across Southeast Asia and Europe voiced their willingness to collaborate and settle in Wenchang, citing the combined advantages of launch infrastructure and free trade port policies. The Hainan Aerospace Data Cross-Border Processing and Trade Zone and a China-Thailand joint "Intelligent Computing Satellite Constellation Laboratory" were officially inaugurated.

Wang Yusong, founder of Hangzhou-based Qianjibian Technology, which specializes in aerospace AI algorithms, revealed that initial consensus has been reached with relevant institutions on multiple fronts. The company plans to establish an AI R&D firm in Wenchang. Hainan is transforming its launch capabilities into data advantages, shifting the commercial space focus from "building rockets and launching satellites" to "utilizing data and selling services."

Cao Dezhi, co-founder of Beijing-based Xingce Weilai Technology, noted that overseas business is becoming a key growth direction for Chinese commercial space companies. The free trade port provides a unique platform for companies to go global, and the newly established Hainan Aerospace Data Cross-Border Processing and Trade Zone offers pioneering benefits for businesses seeking to expand overseas satellite application services. "We have signed a cooperation agreement with the Hainan Satellite Data and Application Research Center to provide flood disaster detection services to Thailand using radar satellite on-orbit intelligent identification technology," Cao said, expressing hope that Wenchang will serve as a long-term springboard for exporting aerospace technology and services.

Li Guoping, Chief Engineer of the China National Space Administration, pledged full support for Hainan's ambitions in space. He emphasized accelerating the clustering of rocket manufacturing, satellite production, and data application industries, promoting routine commercial space operations, and building Hainan into an innovation hub for China's commercial space sector.

Where to begin: The forum highlighted Hainan's strategic push to integrate launch infrastructure with free trade port policies, creating a unique value proposition for global space industry players.

Why the focus on just 17 companies: The agreements signed at the forum represent a targeted selection of enterprises across the entire commercial space value chain, from rocket recovery to satellite services, signaling a deliberate effort to build a complete industrial ecosystem in Wenchang.

Beyond launches: Hainan's shift from launch services to data-driven applications marks a significant strategic evolution, positioning the province as a key player in the global space economy's next phase of growth.
