Burnham Commits to No Early General Election If Succeeding Starmer as UK Prime Minister

Andy Burnham has stated that he would not call an early UK general election if he were to succeed Keir Starmer as Prime Minister.

Asked on the social media platform Reddit on Friday whether he would hold an election, Burnham replied "no." He is the only declared candidate in the Labour leadership contest to replace Starmer this month.

Burnham indicated he would adhere to the party's manifesto commitments from the 2024 general election. He said this includes a pledge to maintain the so-called "triple lock" on the state pension.

Other points made by Burnham on Reddit include:

He advocates for stronger public control over services such as water, which could range from "tough regulation to public ownership."

He would seek to build closer ties with the European Union, building on what he called Starmer's "good work."

He is prepared to negotiate with countries like Afghanistan to reach agreements for the return of failed asylum seekers.

He supports electoral reform and would seek to persuade the Labour Party of its benefits.

He would ensure the UK's defence investment plan is "properly funded."

He is "100% committed" to maintaining support for Ukraine.

If no other candidates come forward by the nomination deadline on July 16, Burnham is expected to become Labour leader the following day and Prime Minister on July 20.

This would come just a month after his triumphant return to the House of Commons, having won a by-election in Makerfield near Manchester last month.
