Movement Alert|iShares MSCI South Korea ETF Falls 5.04% in Pre-Market Trading, Global Bond Yield Surge Triggers Korean Market Reversal

On August 18, iShares MSCI South Korea ETF declined 5.04% in pre-market trading, trading at $176.10/share, with turnover of $59.996 million, sharply reversing the prior session's 5.22% gain.

The decline was triggered by a global bond selloff that hammered Korean equities. The KOSPI index, which had rallied over 20% from its July low over five consecutive sessions, ended its winning streak with a drop exceeding 1%. Korea's benchmark 10-year government bond yield surged 9.5 basis points to 4.395%, while the U.S. 30-year Treasury yield hit 5.29%, its highest since 2007. Samsung Electronics reversed an early 4.9% gain to close down 2.19%, and SK Hynix pared an 8.9% intraday advance to finish up just 1.03%.

Analysts noted that rising bond yields destabilized foreign capital flows into Korean equities. The broader MSCI Asia-Pacific index fell 1%, as concerns over fiscal deficits, persistent inflation, and elevated energy prices pressured long-duration assets globally.

The fund generally invests at least 80% of its assets in the component securities of the MSCI Korea Index, a free float-adjusted market capitalization-weighted index designed to measure the performance of the large- and mid-capitalization segments of the Korean equity market.
