Heavy equipment manufacturer Caterpillar (CAT.US) reported a record-breaking second-quarter earnings on Tuesday, easily surpassing Wall Street expectations, driven by robust demand for power generation equipment, construction machinery, and mining products, sending shares surging over 11% in pre-market trading. As of Monday's close, the stock has gained 45% year-to-date.

Revenue Breaks the $20 Billion Mark for the First Time

Caterpillar reported second-quarter sales of $20.54 billion, significantly exceeding the consensus estimate of $19.2 billion. Adjusted earnings per share reached $8.17, notably above the analyst forecast of $6.20. Net income jumped to $3.59 billion ($7.77 per share) from $2.18 billion ($4.62 per share) in the same period last year. Operating profit rose 50% year-over-year to $4.30 billion, with the operating margin expanding to 20.9% from 17.3% a year ago, while the adjusted operating margin reached 21.9%.

Chairman and CEO Joe Creed stated, "This is the first time in the company's history that quarterly revenue has exceeded $20 billion. Strong order rates and a growing backlog reflect the broad-based expansion of momentum across our three primary segments." Total sales and revenue increased 24% year-over-year to $20.54 billion, with higher end-user equipment purchases contributing $3.1 billion in incremental volume and favorable pricing adding another $595 million.

Growth Across All Three Segments

The quarter showcased comprehensive growth rather than reliance on a single business line. Sales across Caterpillar's three main segments rose, order rates improved, and the backlog continued to grow, boosting investor confidence in the sustainability of the growth momentum. These three segments together account for approximately 81% of the company's total revenue.

By segment, Construction Industries sales surged 35% to $8.346 billion, with segment profit climbing 57% to $1.947 billion and the margin expanding to 23.3% from 20.1%. The North American market was particularly strong, with sales jumping 50%, while Latin America grew 25% and the EAME region rose 23%. Resource Industries revenue increased 20% to $4.648 billion, benefiting from international locomotive deliveries and higher mining equipment sales. Power & Energy sales grew 17% to $8.238 billion, with power generation sales surging 29% to $3.1 billion, primarily driven by demand for large reciprocating engines and turbines used in data center applications. This segment's profit rose 30% to $2.027 billion, achieving a margin of 24.6%.

AI Infrastructure Boom as a Core Driver

For investors, the central theme remains Caterpillar’s continued benefit from the AI infrastructure wave. The company noted that the 17% sales growth in the Power & Energy segment was driven by increased sales of large reciprocating engines and turbines for data center power generation, with contributions from the oil and gas market as well. The Construction and Resource industries also benefited from solid equipment demand, indicating healthy spending across multiple industrial end markets.

At the end of the quarter, Caterpillar held $6.7 billion in corporate cash and generated $4.4 billion in operating cash flow. The company returned $2.2 billion to shareholders through $1.5 billion in share repurchases and $700 million in dividends. Known globally for its Cat-branded construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines, and locomotives, Caterpillar benefited from increased equipment purchases by end users in North America and other major regions. The company also noted that stronger dealer activity and a favorable pricing environment added incremental contributions to the quarter's results.
