Coupang, Inc. shares plunged 7.03% in post-market trading after the South Korean e-commerce giant reported second-quarter results that missed analyst expectations on both revenue and profit, while a massive regulatory fine for a data breach erased earnings.
Total net revenues rose 4% year-over-year to $8.86 billion, but fell short of the consensus estimate of $8.96 billion. The company swung to a net loss of $570 million, or $0.32 per diluted share, from a net profit of $32 million a year earlier. The results were heavily impacted by a $410 million (approximately 624.7 billion won) administrative fine imposed by the Korea Personal Information Protection Commission over a data breach that affected nearly 34 million accounts. Excluding this fine, the adjusted net loss was $160 million, with an adjusted loss of $0.09 per share, which met the consensus estimate of a $0.07 loss but still represented a significant decline from the prior year's earnings of $0.02 per share.
The record penalty, which stemmed from a data breach that came to light in late 2025 and sparked widespread public criticism, contributed to a sharp contraction in gross profit margin to 28.2% and an operating loss of $556 million. While Product Commerce Active Customers grew 3% to 24.7 million, net revenues per active customer declined 2%. The company’s Developing Offerings segment, including its Taiwan operations and Coupang Eats, saw revenue jump 20%, but this was not enough to offset the negative impact of the fines and weaker core commerce results.
