Hong Kong's Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) released its latest quarterly report on August 18, revealing that the total asset value of MPF schemes reached approximately HK$1.67 trillion as of the end of June, marking a new quarterly high and representing a 174% increase compared to ten years ago.
Since the implementation of the MPF system in 2000, equity funds and mixed asset funds, which together account for 81% of total MPF assets, have delivered average annualized net returns (after deducting fees and charges) of 5.1% and 4.8%, respectively, significantly outperforming the annualized inflation rate of 1.8% over the same period.
As of the end of June 2026, 3.73 million accounts had investments in funds under the Default Investment Strategy (DIS), commonly known as "lazy funds," representing more than one-third of all over 11 million MPF accounts. The total asset value of these investments stood at HK$188.6 billion, accounting for over 11% of the total MPF assets.
DIS was launched on April 1, 2017. As of the end of June 2026, its Core Accumulation Fund and Age 65 Plus Fund recorded average annualized net returns of 7.3% and 2.7%, respectively, both significantly exceeding the annualized inflation rate of 1.8% during the same period.
As of the end of June 2026, the number of Tax-Deductible Voluntary Contributions (TVC) accounts reached 104,000, marking an 18% year-on-year increase. Since the implementation of TVC in April 2019, the cumulative contribution amount for related accounts has reached HK$16.2 billion.
In the second quarter of 2026, total MPF contributions received amounted to HK$23.4 billion, with voluntary contributions accounting for over a quarter of the total.
