Cryptocurrencies experienced a sharp collective selloff over the weekend, with the market downturn accelerating into Monday's trading session. At the time of writing, Cardano (ADA), XRP, and Stellar (XLM) had plunged over 12%, while Ethereum (ETH) fell more than 5% and Bitcoin (BTC) declined 2.40%. Data from CoinGlass reveals that over the past 24 hours, approximately 179,200 traders globally have been liquidated, with total liquidation value approaching $900 million, of which long position liquidations accounted for over 80%.
Market analysts attribute this sharp correction to two compounding factors: profit-taking by early investors creating concentrated selling pressure, and persistent geopolitical tensions that are driving risk-off sentiment and weighing on risk assets. Meanwhile, Iranian officials have issued fresh warnings regarding economic sanctions, further heightening geopolitical uncertainty.
Massive Liquidations Hit Crypto Market
Between August 22 and 23, the cryptocurrency market witnessed a dramatic selloff. Within a 24-hour window, Bitcoin dropped 2.40% to $76,600, while Ethereum fell 5.29% to $2,383. The decline spread across the broader market, with Cardano tumbling 14.05%, XRP down 12.21%, and Stellar losing 13.17%. Other major tokens including BNB and Solana also declined by more than 5%.
According to CoinGlass data, the global liquidation tally over the past 24 hours reached 179,200 traders, with total liquidated value of $882 million. Long positions accounted for $753 million of that figure, while short liquidations totaled $129 million. The single largest liquidation order occurred on Binance's ETHUSDC pair, valued at $22.43 million.
Prior to this downturn, Bitcoin had posted five consecutive days of gains from August 17 to 21, surging from $63,000 to as high as $69,300, which triggered significant short squeezes in the market.
The recent optimism in crypto markets was largely fueled by US Treasury Secretary Bessent's announcement on August 19 that long-term Treasury buybacks would be at least doubled in scale. This move compressed long-end yields, boosted risk appetite, and forced traders to urgently cover billions of dollars in short positions. On the same day, former President Trump met with crypto industry leaders, further bolstering market sentiment. Meanwhile, gold prices reached their highest levels since May, as investors grew concerned that bond intervention measures could pressure the US dollar.
Rachael Lucas, an analyst at BTC Markets, noted that the true driver behind the recent rally was the expansion of Treasury buybacks. However, the long-term narrative remains unchanged, and Bitcoin's high volatility characteristics are still very much intact.
On the prominent prediction platform Kalshi, both retail speculators and institutional traders are largely betting that Bitcoin will close 2026 near its current price levels. This suggests the remainder of the year could see either sideways consolidation or a high-level rotation phase within a bull market. The average outcome from related contracts on the platform indicates market expectations for Bitcoin at year-end stand around $75,000.
Bridgewater Associates founder Ray Dalio has once again sounded the alarm on US fiscal risks. He pointed out that Treasury Secretary Bessent's announcement of expanded long-term Treasury buybacks, combined with rising long-term Treasury yields and Japan's reduction of US debt exposure, could signal that US fiscal policy is approaching a critical turning point. If debt issues are not addressed promptly, the US could face a more severe debt crisis in the coming years.
Dalio stated explicitly on social media on the 21st that the US government's fiscal situation has reached an "inflection point," warning that without immediate action, debt will continue to balloon until it becomes impossible to resolve without triggering major economic shocks.
In response to potential fiscal and monetary risks, Dalio advises investors to adjust their asset allocations accordingly: reducing bond and other debt instrument positions, while allocating 10% to 15% of portfolios to gold, along with a modest holding of Bitcoin, to enhance diversification against fiscal and monetary volatility.
Middle East and Russia-Ukraine Developments
International geopolitical tensions have also contributed to this weekend's crypto pullback from elevated levels.
On the Middle East front, Iran's Supreme National Security Council Secretary Rezaei stated on the 22nd that Tehran has communicated to nations worldwide not to join the US in waging an economic war against Iran. He declared that any country participating in imposing economic restrictions on Iran will be regarded as an enemy.
Rezaei characterized the Trump administration's economic warfare as also being a propaganda campaign. While Iran has endured prolonged US sanctions, it has learned how to circumvent them. He noted that the maritime blockade issue is not something that can be resolved overnight, and despite months of US naval blockade, Iran has still managed to successfully sell its oil.
Furthermore, he warned that any US action in the southern shipping lanes of the Strait of Hormuz would become a target for Iranian strikes, and that Tehran would target any meetings held by the US with anti-Iranian forces in the region.
Regarding negotiations between Iran and Oman over the Strait of Hormuz, Rezaei indicated that one of the key consultations involves coordinating shipping lanes and trade transit issues, with no problems currently in the talks. The meetings between the two countries' foreign ministers are progressing well, and negotiations continue. The Strait of Hormuz is of vital importance to Iran, and Tehran will reach a final agreement with Oman.
Due to stalled negotiations with Iran, President Trump announced "devastating economic actions" against Iran on the 19th. Trump threatened that any country allowing its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide any form of support to Iran would face severe economic consequences. He called on all US allies to join Washington in isolating Iran and defeating what he termed "the Iranian threat." Treasury Secretary Bessent warned on the 20th that the US would implement "unprecedented economic isolation" measures against Iran.
Regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Russian President Putin stated on the 22nd that Ukrainian armed forces have been continuously launching missile and drone attacks against Russia over the past 40 days in an attempt to defeat the country, calling it "nothing more than an adventure." He claimed that Ukrainian strikes have not produced any substantive turning point.
Putin also stated that in response to Ukrainian attacks on Russian civilian infrastructure, Russian forces have intensified strikes on Ukrainian enterprises, with Russia's retaliatory strikes being "more destructive."
The Russian Defense Ministry reported on the 22nd that Russian forces conducted cluster strikes on the Kyiv region using long-range precision weapons and drones, destroying over 40 trucks equipped with long-range drone launch systems. Additionally, Russian forces struck the Chornomorsk port and the Pivdennyi port, targeting military supply warehouses, fuel storage tanks, cargo vessels, and port infrastructure used by Ukrainian forces.
On the same day, the Ukrainian Armed Forces General Staff reported that Ukrainian forces struck fuel and lubricant storage tanks at the Yeysk port in Russia's Krasnodar Krai. Ukrainian President Zelensky reported on the battlefield situation, stating that Ukrainian forces conducted long-range strikes on multiple targets within Russian territory over the past day, including the Novokuybyshevsk refinery located approximately 1,000 kilometers from the front lines, as well as a logistics hub in the Samara region.
