On June 3, Full Circle Lithium Corp. announced the successful extinguishing of a multi-day fire at a construction and demolition landfill in Evans County, Georgia. The fire is believed to have been ignited by a lithium-ion battery that was improperly disposed of. The company's proprietary firefighting technology, FCL-X, quickly brought the blaze under control after conventional methods had failed, marking another significant real-world validation of the system.
Local fire departments had spent three consecutive days attempting to douse the flames using traditional techniques, but hotspots deep within the waste pile continued to smolder and reignite below the surface. This is a characteristic challenge of landfill fires sparked by lithium-ion batteries, which are notoriously difficult to combat with standard water-based or foam suppressants. Matt Roper, Vice President of the environmental services firm Roper Environmental, noted that lithium-ion batteries have become one of the most significant fire risks for waste management facilities. Once a battery is crushed or punctured during disposal operations, it can easily enter a state of thermal runaway and ignite surrounding materials.
The impact after deploying FCL-X was immediate and dramatic. Open flames were completely extinguished within one hour, remaining hotspots were suppressed within two hours, and all smoldering areas were fully resolved within three hours. Chad Carver, Vice President of Sales and Operations at FCL, explained that lithium-ion battery fires in waste streams are fundamentally different from conventional fires, burning at higher temperatures with a greater tendency to reignite and penetrate deeper. FCL-X, he stated, was specifically engineered as a solution for this industry-wide crisis.
This incident is not an isolated one. The U.S. National Waste & Recycling Association estimates that recycling facilities across the country experience over 5,000 fires annually, with the proportion linked to lithium-ion batteries growing rapidly. The rate of catastrophic losses has increased by 41% over the past five years. The year 2025 was the most severe on record for publicly reported lithium-ion battery fires at waste facilities in the United States and Canada, with 448 incidents, representing a 26% increase over the average from 2016 to 2021.
