After reclaiming the top spot in China's automaker sales rankings, the pressure has intensified on individual brands within the group.
Sources indicate that senior management at the Passenger Vehicle division recently made a sales commitment regarding the Mistras Group MG07 model during a top-level meeting. The directive has been issued for the MG brand to achieve the "number one coupe sales volume in the industry." To reach this objective, the company will coordinate senior factory-level officials to oversee production capacity, quality assurance, and delivery timelines.
In the first half of 2026, the group returned to the top with 2.045 million vehicles sold, though total volume declined slightly by 0.35% year-on-year. While MG has established a significant presence in Europe, it still needs a volume-driving model in the domestic market to follow the MG4. Consequently, the MG07 has been positioned in the mainstream price bracket of around 150,000 yuan.
The MG07 faces a shrinking overall sedan market, yet it targets the growing B-segment pure electric vehicle sector. Competition in the mainstream price range now extends beyond mere specifications. Automakers must balance family space requirements, intelligent features, and supply chain costs within a single equation. The coupe is merely MG's chosen entry point, representing a broader reallocation of the mainstream sedan market.
By entering the 150,000-yuan segment, the MG07 encounters a common challenge faced by Chinese automakers expanding overseas: Can high overseas sales effectively offset the costs of domestic new models? And if domestic sales are strong, can supply chain and delivery keep pace? This issue is not unique to MG but will increasingly confront other Chinese brands leveraging overseas sales as a second growth engine.
Prioritizing Delivery Capacity
On the evening of July 30th, MG did not disclose the order count for the MG07, only providing comparison data against the MG4 for the same period. The General Manager of SAIC MG Brand Business Division stated that the MG07's search index increment across all platforms was roughly double that of the MG4. The data 50 minutes after opening small deposits was about twice that of the MG4's first three hours.
The General Manager did not continue discussing sales figures based on this buzz, stating that the focus should be on production volume rather than sales. The Deputy General Manager of SAIC Passenger Vehicle and General Manager of SAIC Passenger Vehicle Sales Company responded that production issues would be addressed. He also revealed that he had made a sales commitment at the "group's highest-level meeting" the previous week, and a subsequent appointment meeting referenced the MG07, demanding the fulfillment of that promise.
Achieving the goal of "number one coupe sales in the industry" for the MG07 is not easy. In the first half of 2026, domestic sedan retail sales were 3.51 million units, a 30.1% year-on-year decrease. June retail sales were 622,000 units, down 34.3% year-on-year, representing the largest decline among sedans, SUVs, and MPVs. However, within the sedan category, the B-segment pure electric vehicle segment grew, with wholesale volumes reaching 295,000 units in June, a 37% year-on-year increase.
The Chief Expert of SAIC Group and Chief Designer of the R&D General Institute assessed that demand for traditional, classic three-box sedans is declining. To continue attracting consumers, sedans need to enhance sporty, personalized, and fashionable attributes. A common weakness of coupes is the rear seat space, and the MG07 has made rear legroom an engineering priority.
The Chief Designer explained that while retaining large wheels and a sizable battery pack underneath, the MG07 achieves 111mm of rear knee room, with seatbacks that can recline by approximately 5 degrees. This approach reflects Chinese consumer habits, where buyers want a coupe without sacrificing rear seat comfort. The General Manager stated that MG aimed for a pure electric range of about 800 kilometers, referencing the typical range of a full tank in a fuel vehicle, and that the 150,000-yuan price point remains the primary consumption zone for domestic car buyers.
The pre-sale price for the MG07's lidar-equipped version is 135,800 yuan, while the long-range version enters the 150,000-yuan bracket. In this segment, it will directly compete with similarly priced standard pure electric sedans. The MG07's intelligent driving functions will be delivered in batches. The Global Chief Brand Strategy Officer of Momenta recalled that the two parties iterated on a weekly basis, optimizing approximately 38 versions. The MG07 will ship with a reinforcement learning large model, while the R7 world model, curb-to-curb navigation, and roaming mode will be provided via subsequent over-the-air updates.
The Momenta officer also stated that they have over 1 million production vehicles and over 14 billion kilometers of real-world driving data. While this data provides a foundation for iteration, the functional boundaries for the MG07's initial delivery will be based on the version already implemented in the vehicle. The Deputy General Manager acknowledged that models like the MG4 had experienced delivery delays and significant customer dissatisfaction over the past year. He noted that the MG4 currently has a monthly supply of about 15,000 units, which remains insufficient to meet demand. Internal discussions are underway regarding the MG4's production capacity for next year, with an envisioned global monthly supply of at least 30,000 units.
Sales channels are secured. The General Manager stated that the MG brand currently has 480 sales outlets, nearly double the number during the MG4's pre-sale period. Additionally, there are over 100 pop-up stores across 59 core cities, with plans to expand further into suburban areas of first-tier cities, implementing uniform delivery standards. The MG4 switched to online sales last year. The General Manager noted that the MG4 faced public relations issues on its launch night due to inconsistent dealer commission standards, prompting the team to restructure its delivery and customer operations processes.
Leveraging Global Scale to Reduce Vehicle Costs
When the group reclaimed the top sales position, growth was concentrated in independent brands, new energy vehicles, and overseas operations. In the first half of the year, independent brands sold 1.469 million units, up 12.6% year-on-year, accounting for 71.8% of total group sales. New energy vehicle sales reached 796,000 units, a 23.1% increase, while overseas sales totaled 735,000 units, surging 48.7% year-on-year.
The group's return to the top was driven by simultaneous growth across these three segments. However, MG's position within this is uneven: it has established sales and channels in Europe but still lacks a sustained volume model in China. If the MG07 only achieves high volumes in Europe, it won't compensate for the domestic market. Conversely, if it relies solely on domestic price-driven sales, it fails to demonstrate the scale value of a global architecture.
The Deputy General Manager stated that the group is no longer pursuing a large number of products but instead aims for each product to be a "blockbuster." Following the MG4, the MG07 is the next model mandated to achieve high sales volumes. MG has already surpassed annual sales of 300,000 units in Europe. MG Motor disclosed in February that the brand had delivered 1 million vehicles cumulatively in Europe, entered 34 markets, and had over 1,300 dealers. European sales in 2025 exceeded 300,000 units, a 30% year-on-year increase. In the first half of this year, MG sold over 190,000 units in Europe, with the group's full-year target set at 400,000 units.
Looking at the group's specific brands, Wuling focuses on the budget market, IM targets the premium segment, while Roewe and MG aim for the mainstream mass market. The MG07 is vying for this mainstream space. Domestically, the MG4 has achieved monthly deliveries exceeding 10,000 units for nine consecutive months, with 18,000 units delivered in June. Now, the MG07 is expected to continue this sales momentum. This explains why the MG07 is positioned around the 150,000-yuan mark. Competition in this price range is not just about the spec sheet; it also involves delivery speed, after-sales coverage, and long-term ownership costs.
The fact that the MG4's monthly supply of approximately 15,000 units still falls short of demand indicates that MG's current constraint is not a lack of demand, but the ability to ramp up production and delivery. The MG07 packs a long range and lidar into the 150,000-yuan segment, with the Deputy General Manager attributing this cost structure to global scale. He explained that the MG07 is developed on a global architecture, allowing batteries, chassis, core modules, and the 8295 platform to be shared across multiple models. Suppliers pre-invest in development based on projected volumes from future product plans. The 18-in-1 electric drive system simultaneously frees up space, enhances performance, and reduces costs.
The Deputy General Manager stated that loss-making business is unsustainable, so they must use smarter methods to bring down costs. This cost calculation depends on how many models share the common components. The sooner the battery, chassis, 8295 platform, and 18-in-1 electric drive are standardized across multiple models, the easier it is to amortize development, validation, and production line investments. MG's annual European sales exceeding 300,000 units provide a tangible sales base for suppliers. The Deputy General Manager added that this model will subsequently be applied to more products from MG and Roewe.
A shared architecture does not automatically guarantee low prices. Only if MG, Roewe, and overseas models adopt the same modules as planned will suppliers have sufficient orders to justify their upfront investments. If model specifications change, or if market sales or production capacity deviate from expectations, unit costs could still rise. The Chief Designer also indicated that if the MG07 is sold overseas, its larger rear seat space would not be a disadvantage, as overseas consumers would also appreciate such a coupe.
The Momenta officer stated that while Momenta currently collaborates with over 20 automakers across more than 100 models, the overseas intelligent driving deployment plan for the MG07 has not been disclosed. Momenta's scale is a technical foundation, but it does not mean the MG07 is ready for global deployment. The features available at delivery and those requiring an OTA update have been clearly separated for the MG07, but it remains unclear if the overseas version will follow the same path. Feature deployment, services, and follow-up maintenance will all factor into the cost of going overseas.
The cost advantage of the MG07, derived from shared architecture and modules with subsequent models, will only materialize if overseas sales volumes are based on shared models, suppliers schedule production based on global demand, and overseas after-sales costs are manageable. The MG07's first full month of deliveries post-launch, subsequent gross margins, and its overseas launch timeline will reveal the true picture. These factors will not only determine how many MG07s can be sold but also whether Chinese automakers can successfully leverage overseas scale to subsidize their domestic mainstream market operations.
