United Airlines announced on Tuesday at Newark Liberty International Airport that it will add ten new international cities in 2027, alongside increased frequencies on several existing routes, describing the move as the largest international network expansion in the carrier's history. Tickets go on sale immediately via the airline's website and app, though all new routes remain subject to government approval. Of the ten new destinations, eight currently lack nonstop service from any other U.S. carrier. The company also showcased its "Born to Explore" Airbus A321XLR, which will operate five of the new routes. Since 2017, United has added 58 international destinations to its map, now serving more than 160 international cities.

The first flights for the ten new routes, along with their departure points, frequencies, and aircraft, are scheduled to begin on March 27, 2027. San Francisco to Okinawa (Naha), Japan, will run three times weekly on the Boeing 777-200ER. Washington Dulles to Toulouse, France, will be a daily service starting April 26, utilizing the A321XLR. The remaining eight routes will all depart from Newark. Newark to Luxembourg begins April 2 with daily A321XLR service. Newark to Ljubljana, Slovenia, starts May 12 with four weekly flights on the Boeing 767-400ER. Newark to Olbia, Sardinia, Italy, launches May 27 with three weekly Boeing 767-300ER flights. Newark to Catania, Sicily, follows the next day with four weekly services on the same 767-300ER. Ibiza begins May 31 with four weekly flights, Valencia starts June 2 with three weekly services, and Marseille launches June 4 with daily operations, all three utilizing the A321XLR. Terceira Island in the Azores starts June 9 with three weekly Boeing 737 MAX 8 flights. Destinations marked with an asterisk are exclusive nonstop routes offered by a U.S. carrier.

Patrick Quayle, Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning, said travelers are seeking to avoid overly crowded European metropolises. He also noted a rise in open-jaw bookings—flying into one city and returning from another—prompting the airline to add multiple points in France, Italy, Spain, and Portugal. Quayle stated that existing routes will not be suspended to make room for the new services. Four additional routes to existing destinations were also unveiled. Los Angeles to Osaka, Japan, will become a daily Boeing 787-9 flight starting March 27, 2027, making United the only carrier to fly nonstop from two U.S. mainland cities to Osaka, complementing existing service from San Francisco and Guam. Washington Dulles to Milan begins May 28 with three weekly flights. Denver to Paris launches May 27 as a daily service. San Francisco to Tel Aviv is scheduled to resume March 28 with three weekly flights, which the airline claims will offer the most business-class seats between the two cities. Routes opened in summer 2026—Split, Bari, Glasgow, and Santiago de Compostela—will continue operating from Newark in summer 2027.

Media reports citing United note that since 2021, the airline has added 49 destinations, 32 of which are exclusive nonstops among U.S. carriers. Chief Executive Officer Scott Kirby said the seasons for these new international destinations have been extended beyond summer, with flying continuing through October, which he described as one of the best months of the year. Speaking at the Newark event, Kirby highlighted that the airline leads U.S. carriers in flights and seats across both the Atlantic and Pacific, and noted that Newark has been the most on-time airport in the New York area year-to-date. Toulouse is home to Airbus headquarters, with its U.S. office in Herndon, Virginia; Luxembourg hosts Amazon's European headquarters, while Arlington, Virginia, houses Amazon's second U.S. headquarters—both routes are positioned to attract business travelers.

The A321XLR was displayed at Newark, set to serve Ibiza, Luxembourg, Marseille, Toulouse, and Valencia. It features 20 Polaris suites and 12 Premium Plus seats, offering 16 more premium seats than the Boeing 757-200. The Economy Plus configuration leaves the middle seat empty with a shared table, a layout United expects to be unique among major U.S. carriers. MileagePlus members can access complimentary Starlink Wi-Fi. The A321XLR is slated for domestic service starting in September, transitioning to international routes on December 1, with initial flights from Washington Dulles to Amsterdam and Dublin. Tickets for the first international services go on sale August 27. Currently, most new European cities lack direct U.S. flights, allowing Newark travelers to arrive overnight in destinations like Valencia without connections.
