The 1.45-square-kilometer Huaqiangbei district serves as a vivid window into the evolution of Shenzhen's innovation ecosystem. Here, one can feel the "Shenzhen cycle" that astounds overseas engineers. Earlier this year, Mehdi, a European engineer, shared his experience on social media: "In my first week at Huaqiangbei, I completed four prototype iterations of a motor control board for a total cost of less than $1,000. Back home, a friend working on a similar project spent over $12,000 on a single modification and waited nearly two months." He describes Huaqiangbei as a "collective learning organism" — "Within a 2-kilometer radius, there are 20 PCB factories, 15 injection molding plants, and 30 component distributors. This intelligence resides in the relationships between nodes, self-reinforcing every day."

Behind this efficient iteration lies Shenzhen's decades-deep full-industry-chain supporting capability. Wang Chengzhu, deputy general manager of Shenzhen Huaqiang Electronics World Management Co., Ltd., explains that the district now hosts over 1,000 small and medium-sized design studios. Designers are rooted in office buildings, routinely "soaking" in the market to observe consumer trends. Once a design blueprint is ready, they can source all necessary components within a few minutes' walk, complete prototyping and testing the same day, and after passing tests, directly connect with surrounding factories for mass production. "The entire innovation loop is completed within a few hundred square kilometers."

Long-tail spot procurement is the irreplaceable core competitiveness of this ecosystem. Wang Xiaohong, president of Shenzhen Huaqiang Industries Co., Ltd., notes that small micro-startup teams can get even 10 chips delivered the same day for R&D prototyping; mid-to-large enterprises facing sudden production line material shortages don't have to wait two to three months for original equipment manufacturers' production schedules — here, they can resolve urgent needs the same day.

The solid industrial foundation not only supports rapid iteration in consumer electronics but also nurtures cluster-style breakthroughs in future industries. On the global race track of humanoid robotics, Shenzhen has seen a concentration of complete-machine enterprises with distinctive technical features, forming a complete industrial lineup from core components to whole-machine R&D, from technological breakthroughs to scenario implementation. In 2025, a video of a robot performing the classic dance from the movie "Kung Fu Hustle" went viral online. This robot is the fruit of Zhao Tongyang's third entrepreneurial venture as founder and chairman of Zhongqing Robotics. "Shenzhen has a well-established hardware supply chain. The servo motors, sensors, controllers, and other key components we need can all be quickly matched locally, greatly reducing R&D costs," Zhao explains.

Behind the leading complete-machine enterprises is the strong support of a local core-component supply system. Zhaowei Electromechanical's micro-drive systems, Inovance Technology's servo systems, Diji Robot's computing chips, Orbbec's 3D vision solutions, and Suteng Innovation's LiDAR — a cohort of Shenzhen enterprises have filled industry technology gaps, building a solid foundation for independent industrial development. The industrial clustering effect continues to amplify, with gradient configurations for startups — "a desk, an office, a floor of offices" — providing high-quality, low-cost spaces for entrepreneurship and innovation. The "Embodied Intelligence Port" spanning 23 square kilometers in the Qianhai and Bao'an areas is rapidly rising, already gathering over 130 upstream and downstream embodied intelligence enterprises. Nanshan's "Robot Valley" builds an innovation iron triangle of "university + research institute + enterprise," linking Bao'an's precision manufacturing cluster, Nanshan's software algorithm resources, and Qianhai's institutional advantages. Longgang District is creating a "Robot Street" integrating robot theaters, testing grounds, and industrial parks, opening the world's first robot 6S store, driving domestic robot enterprises from "fighting alone" to "winning together in clusters."

The "Shenzhen Action Plan for Technological Innovation and Industrial Development of Embodied Intelligent Robots (2025-2027)" sets a target of exceeding 100 billion yuan in related industry scale by 2027. Simultaneously, Shenzhen is precisely targeting key technology areas such as multimodal sensors and bionic dexterous hands, directly confronting core industrial challenges.

Liu Guohong, president of the China Development Institute (Shenzhen), observes that Shenzhen's path of fostering new quality productive forces through revolutionary technological breakthroughs, innovative allocation of production factors, and deep industrial transformation and upgrading has value that transcends individual industry clusters. It offers an analyzable and inspiring "Shenzhen sample" for broader industrial transformation, upgrading, and future industry cultivation.
