On August 6th, in Huanggang, Hubei Province, the 2026 "Roots Seeking Journey in China" Summer Camp, themed "Charming Hubei," officially commenced. This event gathered 60 young people of Chinese descent from five countries, including the United States, France, Spain, Canada, and Germany. They paired up with 60 local youths from Huanggang, embarking on a 10-day cultural journey to reconnect with their heritage.

This event is organized by the All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, serving as a flagship annual activity within the "Roots-Seeking Journey" cultural exchange program. During the camp, participants will explore the Red Cliff site in Huanggang, where the famed poet Su Dongpo once found inspiration, to experience the elegance of the Song Dynasty. They will travel to Suizhou to pay homage to the legendary Yan Emperor, tracing the roots of Chinese civilization. In Xiangyang, the group will visit the ancient Longzhong area, immersing themselves in the stories of the Three Kingdoms era. A trip to Yichang will include a tour of the Three Gorges Dam, witnessing the majesty of a modern national engineering marvel. Finally, they will ascend the Yellow Crane Tower in Wuhan to enjoy a panoramic view of the city, observing its vibrant and innovative spirit.

Wang Huiping, Vice President of the Hubei Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, emphasized that youth of Chinese heritage act as a bridge connecting China with the world. She encouraged them to seize this learning opportunity, capturing the memories of Hubei through their lenses and writings. Their goal is to share China's landscapes, culture, and the province's new developments, serving as youthful ambassadors who tell the story of Hubei and foster connections between China and other nations.

Liao Zhiqing, a camper from the United States, noted that her father's ancestral home is Huanggang, Hubei. She expressed that setting foot on this land, which she had heard about from her elders since childhood, allowed her to truly feel its warmth and spirit. For her, this trip is not only a journey home across mountains and seas but also a spiritual return to her roots.

Following the opening ceremony, an award presentation was held for the winners of the 26th World Chinese Students' Essay Competition from Hubei Province. This year's competition, themed "Understanding China, Connecting the World," attracted over 5.7 million students from 84 countries and regions worldwide. Among the participants, two students from Hubei won the grand prize, and 239 received first-place awards.
