Novo Nordisk's Weight-Loss Pill Wegovy Reaches 3 Million Prescriptions Since Launch

The pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk A/S has announced its weight-loss oral medication Wegovy has surpassed 3 million prescriptions since its initial availability in early January.

The Danish drugmaker stated on Sunday that the prescription count reached 1 million after 12 weeks on the shelves of U.S. pharmacies and online suppliers, with an additional 2 million prescriptions written in the following 10 weeks.

More than 80% of new prescriptions for Wegovy were for patients new to GLP-1 class medications. The company noted this suggests the new oral formulation is expanding the market for obesity treatment rather than simply replacing existing injectable therapies.

Following the initial U.S. launch of the oral Wegovy, the firm announced last week the drug's availability in the United Arab Emirates and indicated preparations are underway for further regional launches in the second half of this year.

The drugmaker also recently introduced a higher-dose version of its Wegovy injectable, reporting strong initial demand for this product as well.

Wegovy HD is a once-weekly injection containing 7.2 milligrams of the active ingredient semaglutide. The company has stated this formulation offers the strongest weight-loss effect among all Wegovy injectables to date.

Prior to the launch of Wegovy HD, the highest available injection dose was 2.4 milligrams of semaglutide.
