According to the latest data from Mongolia's National Statistics Office, reported by China Coal Resource Network, coal production in Mongolia saw a significant rebound in May 2026, surging by over 50% year-on-year to reach a new historical high.

The figures show that Mongolia's coal output for May was 12.2841 million tonnes, representing a month-on-month increase of 27.87% and a substantial year-on-year rise of 50.90%. For the period from January to May, the cumulative coal production in Mongolia totaled 50.5528 million tonnes, marking a year-on-year growth of 44.25%.

International Trade Data

Separate reports from China Coal Resource Network indicate that Japan's Ministry of Finance released preliminary trade statistics showing the country imported 11.541 million tonnes of coal in May 2026, an increase of 11.8% compared to the same period last year.

Preliminary data reveals that in May, Japan imported 1.045 million tonnes of coal from the United States, down 7.8% year-on-year, and 90,000 tonnes from Russia, a sharp decline of 54.4%. Japan's imports of thermal coal for the month reached 6.601 million tonnes, growing by 14.1% year-on-year.

Statistics Canada's latest data shows that the country's coal exports in April 2026 declined for the fourth consecutive month, reaching the lowest level since June 2024. Canada's coal exports for April were 2.2803 million tonnes, falling by 29.17% year-on-year and 15.42% month-on-month.

According to the China Coal Economic Research Association, data released by the Korea Customs Service (KCS) shows that South Korea's cumulative coal imports from January to May 2026 reached 46.8058 million tonnes, representing a 19.4% increase compared to the same period last year. Specifically, South Korea imported 8.2999 million tonnes of coal in May alone, up 20.1% year-on-year but down 8.6% month-on-month.

Updates from Listed Coal Companies

China Shenhua Energy Company Limited (SHA: 601088) released its key operational data for May 2026 on June 17. The announcement showed commercial coal production for May was 41.7 million tonnes, a decrease of 4.1% year-on-year. Cumulative production for the year reached 207.2 million tonnes, down 4.0%. Coal sales volume for May was 50.5 million tonnes, an increase of 11.7% year-on-year, bringing the cumulative sales for the year to 249.7 million tonnes, up 3.3%.

Lu'an Environmental Energy Development Co., Ltd. (SHA: 601699) issued several announcements on June 17. These included notices regarding providing financial assistance to its controlling subsidiaries, the approval of its subsidiary's Yaojiashan Coal Mine project by the National Energy Administration, and announcements concerning the election of the Chairman of the Board, an employee director, the supplementation of a non-independent director, and the appointment of a Deputy General Manager and Chief Financial Officer.

The details are as follows: (1) The company provided a total of RMB 13.0586 million in financial assistance to two of its controlling subsidiaries, Shanxi Lu'an Yuanfeng Mining Co., Ltd. and Shanxi Lu'an Group Puxian Houbao Coal Industry Co., Ltd., for working capital, advancing project construction, and securing reserve resources. (2) Its subsidiary, Shanxi Lu'an Yuanfeng Mining Co., Ltd., received approval from the National Energy Administration for the construction of the Yaojiashan Coal Mine project in the Liliu Mining Area, Shanxi Province. The project is located in Lin County, Luliang City, Shanxi. Upon completion, it will add 3 million tonnes per year of new coal production capacity, aiding the company in responding to Shanxi Province's requirements for building a coal supply guarantee base. (3) In accordance with the Company Law and the company's Articles of Association, the company held the 14th meeting of its 8th Board of Directors on June 17, 2026. All directors unanimously elected Mr. Mao Yonghong as the Chairman of the 8th Board of Directors and the convener of the Board's Strategy Committee, with a term coinciding with the current board. Through democratic voting by employee representatives, Mr. Yan Haiping was elected as the Employee Director of the 8th Board of Directors, with a term coinciding with the current board. Following nomination and board deliberation, Mr. Feng Lisong was appointed as the company's Deputy General Manager and Chief Financial Officer. Mr. Feng was also nominated as a candidate for non-independent director of the 8th Board of Directors, subject to approval at the shareholders' meeting.
