Qinghai-Tibet Railway Electrification Contracts Awarded: 9 Packages Worth Nearly 6.6 Billion Yuan

The electrification upgrade project for the Golmud-Lhasa section of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway has now confirmed the winners across all nine construction packages.

China Railway First Group, China Railway Fifteenth Group, China Railway Twentieth Group, China Railway Construction, China Railway Engineering, China Railway Wuhan Electrification Bureau, China Railway Electrification Bureau, China Railway Construction Electrification Bureau, and Tonghao Engineering Bureau each secured a package, with the combined contract value reaching close to 6.6 billion yuan.

These works cover a comprehensive scope 鈥?from subgrade, bridges and culverts, and track to building construction, plus electric traction power supply, communications, and signaling 鈥?essentially encompassing all major construction disciplines involved in this electrification program.

The planned construction period is uniformly set at 912 calendar days, with a scheduled commencement date of November 1, 2026, after which multiple units will advance work simultaneously on site.

Starting with the three ZQ packages. The ZQ1 package was awarded to China Railway Twentieth Group Co., Ltd. with a contract value of approximately 328 million yuan.

The ZQ2 package went to China Railway First Group Co., Ltd. with a contract value of roughly 779 million yuan, the largest among the three ZQ packages.

The ZQ3 package was won by China Railway Fifteenth Group Co., Ltd. with a contract value of about 391 million yuan. Together, the three packages total close to 1.5 billion yuan.

This portion involves subgrade, bridges and culverts, and track works. In an electrification upgrade of an existing railway, much of the work is not about building on a blank slate 鈥?crews must also account for the existing line and the subsequent entry of other disciplines on site. When the construction faces are handed over and which locations are tackled first will directly affect the electrification installation that follows.

Building construction is divided into two packages. The FJ1 package was awarded to China Railway Construction Group Co., Ltd. with a contract value of approximately 765 million yuan.

The FJ2 package went to China Railway Engineering Group Co., Ltd. with a contract value of about 617 million yuan. The two building packages together exceed 1.3 billion yuan, a considerable scale.

In railway electrification upgrades, buildings are not merely ordinary production facilities 鈥?they must also provide conditions for subsequent equipment installation, operations management, and railway system use. Many individual buildings are modest in size, but once distributed along the line, there are numerous points and construction organization becomes quite fragmented.

The most concentrated contract values lie in the traction power supply segment. The QD1 package was awarded to China Railway Wuhan Electrification Bureau Group Co., Ltd. with a contract value of approximately 839 million yuan.

The QD2 package went to China Railway Electrification Bureau Group Co., Ltd. with a contract value of about 1.573 billion yuan, the highest among all nine packages.

The QD3 package was won by China Railway Construction Electrification Bureau Group Co., Ltd. with a contract value of approximately 843 million yuan. The three QD packages together exceed 3.2 billion yuan, accounting for nearly half of the total contract value in this batch.

The Golmud-Lhasa section of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway is undergoing electrification, so traction power supply is naturally the centerpiece of the works. Equipment foundations, power supply systems, overhead contact lines, and related ancillary facilities must be laid out in step with the line conditions. If civil works and buildings are handed over slowly, the electrification work that follows will be squeezed.

The remaining RD package was awarded to Tonghao Engineering Bureau Group Co., Ltd. with a contract value of approximately 453 million yuan, mainly covering communications, signaling, and other specialized works.

At this stage of the railway upgrade, there will not be just one or two construction crews on site. Pre-station works, building construction, electrification, and communications and signaling all advance in parallel. In some areas civil works come first, in others equipment buildings are already under construction, and time must still be reserved for overhead contact lines, communications and signaling, and system commissioning.

912 days may not seem short, but spread across such a long line and so many disciplines, the schedule is still fairly tight. The Golmud-Lhasa section of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway has inherently distinctive line conditions, and the engineering points span a vast distance. How personnel, machinery, and materials are organized differs from railway construction in ordinary regions.

This is especially true for upgrading an existing railway 鈥?construction cannot focus only on one's own package. When disciplines hand over to one another and how operating conditions are accommodated are matters that must all be coordinated together.

With all nine packages now confirmed, the main construction units are essentially in place. Several China Railway engineering bureaus will handle pre-station works and building construction, several electrification specialists will take on traction power supply, and Tonghao will handle communications and signaling 鈥?the entire construction framework is now assembled.

What follows is mobilization and on-site construction. Once work begins in November, this batch of engineering worth nearly 6.6 billion yuan will progressively unfold along the Golmud-Lhasa route, and this round of electrification on the Qinghai-Tibet Railway will truly enter the intensive construction phase.
