Experts from the Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences recently visited Tangyuankou Village in Linshan Township, Kaihua County, to provide on-site guidance for harvesting. In the village's fruit corn planting base, lush green cornstalks stand tall and robust, with plump ears wrapped in layers of husks. Twelve acres of premium "Xuetian 7401" fruit corn have officially entered their harvest period.

Farmers move through the fields picking corn. Peeling back the husks reveals plump, round kernels with a pearly white sheen. A gentle squeeze releases a burst of clear, sweet juice. "This variety has thin skin and no fibrous residue. It's crisp and tender, bursting with juice when bitten into. Eaten raw, it's like fruit; cooked, it becomes even sweeter," explained farmer Cao Gentu, who was harvesting.

It is understood that last year, Tangyuankou Village adopted an innovative approach by fully utilizing idle morel mushroom greenhouses in the village and introduced the high-quality "Xuetian 7401" variety recommended by the Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences. This variety is early-maturing, requiring only about 80 days from seedling emergence to fresh ear harvest, which is one month earlier than ordinary fruit corn, allowing it to capture market opportunities ahead of competitors. After trial planting last year, the village found that the taste of the second and third crops was slightly inferior. This year, they have focused on cultivating the first crop intensively to ensure top quality.

"Our fruit corn is grown under the on-site guidance of experts from the Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences throughout the entire process," said Yan Jing, Party Branch Secretary and Village Committee Director of Tangyuankou Village. This variety can achieve a sweetness level of up to 18 degrees, and testing shows its total soluble sugar content far exceeds that of ordinary sweet corn.

Thanks to the excellent variety and scientific management, the fruit corn attracted buyers from Hangzhou, Yueqing, and other areas on the first day of pre-sales. Nearly 60 boxes have already been ordered and are awaiting harvest. This year, the expected yield per mu (approximately 0.067 hectares) is 1,250 kilograms, with an average profit of about 10,000 yuan per mu. "By developing specialty fruit corn cultivation, we have not only enriched the village's distinctive industries but also effectively expanded villagers' income channels, further strengthening the village's collective economy," Yan Jing added.
