This planned transaction marks the first step following the company's strategic review.
The company stated the deal is still subject to regulatory approval and is expected to be finalized in the second half of 2026. German food delivery company Delivery Hero announced it has agreed to sell its food delivery platform business in Taiwan to Grab Holdings for $600 million in cash, as the German firm seeks to optimize its balance sheet by streamlining its business portfolio. This transaction represents the first major move by Delivery Hero since it initiated a strategic review last year, and it also marks Grab's first expansion into a market outside Southeast Asia. Over the past year, Delivery Hero's stock price has continued to decline. In December, the company announced it had begun an assessment of its partnerships, assets, and operations in various countries. Delivery Hero stated on Monday that the net proceeds from the sale of the Foodpanda Taiwan business will be used to repay debt and optimize the company's capital structure. The company noted that the sale of Foodpanda is still subject to regulatory approval and is expected to be completed in the second half of 2026. Amid a broader decline in European stocks due to the Middle East conflict, Delivery Hero's shares rose 3.5% in early European trading; meanwhile, Grab's stock fell 1.1% in U.S. pre-market trading. Delivery Hero's CEO said in an interview earlier this month that the sale of the Foodpanda Taiwan business comes as the company focuses on its core regional markets and aims to achieve profitability in its key markets by the end of next year. Its core markets include Argentina, Spain, South Korea, and the Middle East. Grab stated that the transaction is expected to contribute at least $60 million in incremental adjusted EBITDA to the company by 2028. The SoftBank-backed ride-hailing firm reaffirmed its current year performance guidance, projecting adjusted EBITDA to be between $700 million and $720 million. Grab CEO Anthony Tan said in a statement, "This is a logical next step for Grab. The experience we have accumulated in Southeast Asia is highly relevant to this market. Our long-standing expertise in operating complex food delivery logistics in high-density, high-traffic cities is well-suited to Taiwan's bustling urban environment." The company stated that, based on the expected closing timeline, the transaction will increase Grab's 2026 group revenue forecast. The company's current guidance is between $4.04 billion and $4.1 billion. The Southeast Asian tech company indicated that it remains open to further acquisitions while maintaining strict criteria for transactions. In February, Grab acquired U.S. investment app Stash Financial for $425 million, including debt, to expand its product portfolio. Grab plans to complete the full migration of Foodpanda Taiwan's users, merchant partners, and delivery partners to the Grab app by early 2027.
