Amazon Confirms Fresh Round of Layoffs Focused on Retail Division

Amazon confirmed on Wednesday that it has eliminated a small number of positions, primarily within its Stores retail division, which oversees its main e-commerce website.

The retail division layoffs come during one of Amazon's biggest promotional periods of the year — "Prime Big Deal Days" — which began on Tuesday and ran through Wednesday, offering various discounts.

This round of cuts is the latest in a series of smaller-scale layoffs. The company initiated a larger restructuring last year involving 30,000 people, which continued through January of this year.

Some affected employees contacted Reuters and shared related posts from internal Slack channels. A person familiar with the matter said Amazon cut fewer than 1,000 white-collar employees in this round. Business Insider had previously reported on the layoffs.

"We adjusted certain parts of the Stores business because we believe this structure will better help us advance our business priorities," a spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

Internal Slack channels showed that multiple teams within the Stores business were affected, including customer service and selling partner services divisions, with other company departments potentially impacted as well. Employees from the United States, India, and the United Kingdom received layoff notifications.

Amazon founder and Executive Chairman Jeff Bezos said in an interview broadcast on Wednesday that the company over-hired during the pandemic, making continued layoffs necessary.
