In a landmark announcement on August 21, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. unveiled a massive shareholder return plan via a regulatory filing, detailing a substantial cash dividend for Q3 2026 alongside a total return package that could reach up to 110 trillion won. The company also confirmed that rival chipmaker SK Hynix has separately declared its own shareholder return initiative.
The tech giant plans to execute a cash dividend of approximately 30 trillion won (about 145.6 billion yuan), inclusive of its regular quarterly payout, during the third quarter of 2026. The specific dividend terms will be finalized at a board meeting scheduled for late October 2026. The remaining funds allocated for shareholder returns in 2026 are projected to range between 90 trillion and 110 trillion won (roughly 437 billion to 534.1 billion yuan), with the final figure subject to adjustments based on operational performance and investment needs for the year.
This payout strategy aligns with the shareholder return policy that Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. established for the 2024-2026 period. Under that framework, the company is committed to allocating 50% of its total free cash flow over the three-year span to shareholder returns. This includes an annual regular dividend of 9.8 trillion won, supplemented by additional returns calculated as 50% of cumulative cash flow minus the regular dividends already distributed.
During the 2024-2025 timeframe, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. had already implemented shareholder returns totaling 29.3 trillion won, comprising 20.9 trillion won in cash dividends and 8.4 trillion won dedicated to share buybacks or cancellations. Notably, the single Q3 2026 cash dividend alone exceeds the entire combined returns from 2024 and 2025, making the 2026 total more than triple the figures from the previous two years.
The filing also clarified that the calculation of total free cash flow accounts for deductions related to prepayments on long-term supply agreements for memory products with deposit-like characteristics, as well as expenses tied to employee performance stock awards. Furthermore, the final scale of 2026 shareholder returns could be revised depending on business results and investment activities. Once the annual accounts are finalized, the board will convene in late January 2027 to determine the exact size and structure of the remaining returns, which may include a combination of cash dividends, share buybacks, and cancellations.
In addition, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. approved an employee incentive scheme involving the repurchase of approximately 15 trillion won worth of shares, equivalent to about 53.29 million shares based on the closing price. This news followed earlier reports of a planned 90-100 trillion won shareholder return program, which had already buoyed market sentiment.
As a result of the announcement, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. shares surged by 3.87% on the day, recovering from a significant downturn that had seen the stock drop 25.24% from its June peak through August 20.
