Biotech Stocks Surge as Contract Research Sector Rebounds; Key Hong Kong-Listed Healthcare ETF Gains 3.5%

Aug 17

On August 17, the healthcare sector in Hong Kong saw a robust rebound, with contract research organizations (CROs) leading the charge. WUXI APPTEC shares hit a new all-time high, while Concho Resources-related stocks, including Joinn Laboratories and Asymchem, surged over 6%, and Genscript Biotech gained 5%. The Hong Kong Stock Connect Healthcare ETF (159137), which allows T+0 trading, rose 3.5% intraday, reclaiming the 5-day moving average.

Data shows that the underlying index for this ETF has a 52.5% weighting in CROs, the highest among all investable indexes in the market. Notably, companies under the Wuxi umbrella account for over 38% of the index, also the largest share. Xiangcai Securities noted that the recent strong performance of CROs reflects a global trend driven by improved fundamentals in the pharmaceutical industry as global biotech financing recovers. Chinese CRO firms benefit from the engineering talent pool and are poised to capitalize on this industry tailwind, with the recovery expected to be sustained.

Where to begin

Caitong Securities' research report added that the underlying logic of the current CRO recovery is a two-way resonance in R&D demand both domestically and internationally. Overseas pharmaceutical companies are seeing a rebound in R&D budgets, while domestic firms are completing new drug out-licensing deals, which in turn boosts financing and revives R&D demand from biotech companies. Additionally, the role of artificial intelligence in accelerating the industry is becoming evident, with the AI-driven drug discovery chain entering a positive cycle. The model of AI-assisted design, followed by wet-lab validation and data feedback into AI models, is now established. A commercial closed loop is expected to form, first benefiting upstream suppliers of protein synthesis, protein reagents, and preclinical CRO services, which could reflect in their earnings.

Why just two key ETFs?

To capture CRO investment opportunities, two major tools are available. The Hong Kong Stock Connect Healthcare ETF (159137) focuses on the innovative drug chain, with a CRO exposure of over 50%, including more than 38% in Wuxi-linked companies. It also covers JD Health, internet healthcare, and AI-driven drug development leaders. As a Hong Kong-listed asset, it offers high beta and T+0 trading. An off-exchange feeder fund (026922) is also available. The Healthcare ETF (512170), the largest medical and healthcare ETF in the market, focuses on medical devices and services, with a secondary focus on AI healthcare. It has a 32.82% CRO weighting, with Wuxi Apptec Co.,Ltd. A-shares accounting for 13.42%. Its off-exchange feeder fund is 012323.
