Germany is set to invest 1.5 billion euros to create a strategic gas reserve, according to sources.

This reserve is intended to address various extreme and unforeseen events, such as deliberate attacks on critical energy infrastructure or severe global shortages of natural gas. The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs is currently drafting the relevant plan, which is expected to be approved by the cabinet in mid-August.

The emergency reserve will have a storage capacity of approximately 2.3 billion cubic meters of gas, representing about 10% of Germany's total gas storage capacity.

Reportedly, the overall budget for constructing the storage facilities, purchasing the gas, and injecting it into storage ranges from 1.2 to 1.5 billion euros. This funding will be allocated across the 2027 and 2028 fiscal years. In addition, the annual operational and maintenance costs for the reserve project are estimated to be between 150 and 180 million euros.
