NASA Chief Proposes Orbital Data Centers to Solve AI Power Crunch

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman is pushing for the United States to launch AI data centers into Earth's orbit, arguing that abundant solar energy could ease terrestrial power constraints while strengthening America's position in both the space and artificial intelligence races.

Isaacman believes orbital deployment can ease the AI energy shortfall. In an interview on Wednesday, he stated: "Let's put data centers into Earth's orbit, utilizing the free fusion reactor that's available to us up there, to make sure we win... the space race, and also win the AI race." He noted that orbital facilities could provide a "tremendous advantage" without competing with ground-based projects for the same land and grid capacity.

Isaacman's comments come as the energy demands of AI intensify. The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory estimates that by 2030, data centers could consume 11.8% of U.S. electricity, with scenarios ranging from 9.5% to 15.3%. The International Energy Agency projects that global data center electricity usage will roughly double from 485 terawatt-hours in 2025 to 950 terawatt-hours by 2030.

Musk pushes forward with space-based AI computing vision. Isaacman's friend and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk is even more optimistic. He has stated that for AI computing, "space is the only way to achieve massive computational expansion," and SpaceX could launch orbital data centers as early as next year. Isaacman has previously backed Musk's bet, saying "there's no reason to believe the concept can't be realized."

SpaceX has moved beyond conceptual sketches. Its "Starmind" project plans AI1 computing satellites with peak computing power of up to 250 kilowatts, equipped with solar arrays and laser communication links to Starlink. SpaceX says its Bastrop, Texas facility could mass-produce thousands of AI satellites as early as late 2027. IPO documents also indicate a goal to deploy the first modular orbital AI computing capsules before the end of this decade.

Industry leaders are divided on orbital computing prospects. Rocket Lab CEO Peter Beck calls space data centers "the next frontier in computing infrastructure," and his company is developing solar arrays specifically for high-power orbital systems. However, AWS CEO Matt Garman believes the concept is "still far from reality," citing limited launch capacity and prohibitively high payload costs. In April, reports emerged that even SpaceX warned in its IPO filing that orbital AI depends on unproven technology that may never achieve commercial viability.
