The Bijie City Seed Management Station's technical service team recently visited the Liudongqiao community in Weining County's Liuqiao Subdistrict. The purpose of the visit was to conduct on-site inspections and provide technical guidance for their innovative demonstration project, "Corn Variety Display and Evaluation," which was undertaken as part of a provincial-level "unveiling the list and appointing the leader" initiative.

At the project site, the team meticulously examined the field growth, plant and leaf morphology, and pest and disease conditions of various corn varieties. They engaged in in-depth discussions and provided on-site guidance to the project site manager regarding initial sowing, field management, and the current progress of the trials.

This "Corn Variety Display and Evaluation" project is the first of its kind to be included in the provincial "unveiling the list" program. The Bijie Seed Management Station responded swiftly and with high priority, forming a joint technical service team with the Weining County Seed Station to take on the challenge. The team established a contiguous 30-acre experimental plot in Liudongqiao community, where they are displaying and evaluating a total of 48 corn varieties. Over 60% of these varieties have been developed within the last three years. All displayed varieties are subject to uniform sowing and field management practices, with precise control over sowing depth, density, and fertilization levels to ensure consistent field conditions. The goal is to scientifically compare the varieties in the field and identify at least three superior cultivars with a yield potential not less than 750 kilograms per mu, thereby delivering a solid response to the program's objectives.

Corn is a vital food and feed crop for the city, and the sustainable, healthy development of the industry relies heavily on the support of high-quality varieties. The corn variety display and evaluation process serves as a crucial link between variety registration and large-scale promotion. It provides an intuitive and comprehensive demonstration of each variety's performance in terms of yield potential, stress resistance, adaptability, stability, and key cultivation techniques. This creates the most direct and reliable "field records" and decision-making basis for promoting new varieties, effectively accelerating the adoption and application of new, superior cultivars.

Currently, all field trial activities for this "unveiling the list" project are progressing in an orderly manner. The next step for the team involves continuous follow-up and guidance to ensure the high-quality completion of all evaluation metrics. The aim is to screen and reserve a batch of dominant corn varieties with strong adaptability and excellent performance, thereby fully supporting the high-quality development of the city's corn industry.
