Zoetis's operating environment has recently faced challenges. The company's first-quarter earnings report, released on May 7, showed revenue of $2.3 billion, a 3% year-over-year increase. However, adjusted earnings per share were $1.53, falling short of the market expectation of $1.61. Due to soft demand in the U.S. companion animal market, increased competition, and heightened price sensitivity among pet owners, the company revised its full-year 2024 revenue guidance downward to a range of $9.68 billion to $9.96 billion. The organic operational growth rate was narrowed from a previous range of 3% to 5% to a new range of 2% to 5%. The company's stock price declined approximately 12.8% on the day of the earnings release.
Chief Executive Officer Kristin Peck stated that the first-quarter operating environment was more challenging than anticipated, with pet owners demonstrating greater price sensitivity, leading to a decline in veterinary visits. She emphasized that the company is taking decisive actions to improve commercial execution and expressed confidence in its research and development pipeline, which contains more than 12 potential blockbuster products.
