Since July, persistent high temperatures have propelled Gansu's new energy generation and outbound power transfers to unprecedented highs.
According to statistics from the State Grid Gansu Electric Power Company and the Gansu Power Exchange Center, Gansu's monthly new energy generation in July reached 10.457 billion kilowatt-hours, a year-on-year increase of 8.91%, accounting for 39% of the province's total electricity generation. Outbound power transfers hit 10.29 billion kilowatt-hours. This marks the first time Gansu has achieved a single-month record of both new energy generation and outbound power transfers exceeding 10 billion kilowatt-hours each.
Leveraging an advanced energy storage cluster control system, the Gansu power dispatch department innovatively adopted a scheduling model of "storing green electricity during midday and filling gaps during evening peak demand." This approach maximized resource utilization and enhanced the efficiency of new energy usage. In July, the province's energy storage charging and discharging volume exceeded 900 million kilowatt-hours, boosting the new energy consumption rate by 4 percentage points and effectively addressing the mismatch between new energy generation peaks and user electricity demand.
Liu Kequan, head of the dispatch division at the State Grid Gansu Electric Power Company's power dispatch center, explained that soaring electricity demand during the heatwave pushed the province's peak load to 24.67 million kilowatts in July, up 15% year-on-year. Combined with the volatility of new energy output, this placed significant pressure on grid supply and dispatch operations. The power department proactively forecasted new energy output trends, optimized thermal power unit scheduling to free up ample space for new energy consumption, and coordinated all regulative resources, including storage, thermal, and hydro power, to precisely match supply and demand curves. This effectively managed the surge in electricity demand from high temperatures and ensured the stable and safe operation of the grid.
