To further demonstrate the role of the provincial modern crop cultivation demonstration base in agricultural technology, and to boost the scientific farming skills of nearby growers while advancing the green and efficient development of the corn industry, the Baiyi Training Base of Guizhou Agricultural Vocational College held a training session on green and efficient corn cultivation techniques on July 26.
The event focused on on-site instruction covering two key areas: corn water and fertilizer management with root irrigation techniques, and soybean-corn strip intercropping technology. A total of 102 farmers from surrounding areas participated in the training.
Key Techniques in Corn Water and Fertilizer Management
The training combined theoretical lectures, base observation, and hands-on guidance, extending the classroom directly into the field. This allowed farmers to learn advanced agricultural techniques firsthand at the demonstration site and improve their practical application skills. Wang Hanchao, head of the Baiyi Training Base, explained key techniques for corn water and fertilizer management. Drawing on the corn growth conditions at the base, he highlighted the nutrient needs at different growth stages, methods for precise water and fertilizer regulation, scientific fertilizer ratios, and root irrigation procedures. Through live demonstrations, he guided farmers on how to manage water and fertilizer based on seedling condition, soil moisture, and weather, mastering scientific fertilization and precise irrigation to boost fertilizer efficiency and promote healthy corn growth.
Soybean-Corn Strip Intercropping Training
Following this, teacher Fan Kecheng from the college conducted a specialized session on soybean-corn strip intercropping technology. Using the base's demonstration fields as a reference, Fan explained the advantages of this intercropping model, including variety selection, planting configuration, appropriate density, and field management. He encouraged farmers to recognize the model's role in improving land use efficiency and boosting yields of both grains and legumes.
Field Extension and Practical Learning
During the training, participants visited the corn demonstration area and the soybean-corn strip intercropping demonstration area for on-site observation. Technical staff addressed questions on fertilization management, plant growth regulation, and pest and disease control based on the crops' actual growth. This face-to-face exchange further enhanced the farmers' enthusiasm for learning and applying new agricultural technologies.
This training is a key initiative by the Baiyi Training Base to promote agricultural technology services in line with the corn industry's development needs. It effectively improved the scientific farming level of local farmers, promoted the adoption of green and efficient corn cultivation techniques, and provided technical support for improving grain production quality and efficiency in Wudang District, as well as for the broader development of the agricultural industry.
